Anyone know of YA SFF literature with mentions of mental illness?

There is something oddly satisfying about hunting for lists of books and seeing the same books come up time and time again. It makes me feel like I am actually finding the books I will need. The sad thing is that I know the issues I'm looking at come up a lot on the side and aren't tagged, which is frustrating. I guess this will be the first of ( Read more... )

Sorry, I have a habit of using abbreviations that other people might not know. YA SFF is Young adult science fiction and fantasy. I'm looking at how these fantastical forms of fiction treat these illnesses and how this compares to what is seen in social science and medical(to my nondoctor eye) research.

Although, I'm planning to eventually create lists that expand beyond those genres, so I'll take further recommendations as well.

Katherine Applegate's Everworld series has a character (Jalil) with OCD. It's very much the stereotypical "cleaning" manifestation, but [SPOILER] it goes away entirely when he visits the universe called Everworld

It's definitely portrayed, in at least one book (#4: Realm of the Reaper, IIRC), to be uncomfortable and embarrassing when a fellow student catches him washing his hands seven times. I've only read 5 of the 12, however.

Thanks, I thought I had those on my list, but I guess I didn't. I know I read part of them years ago. I can't remember which ones. I guess it's time to see what the library owns.

Sorry, it took so long to reply. This is a bit of a long term project for me at this point, so I don't always get to add as much to it as I'd like.
