It's distressing

word_geek and I are looking for a new dining room table, so I've been looking around at lots of various furniture websites in addition to visiting actual furniture stores. And the thing I just don't get is distressed furniture. The store I went to today had the table I was interested in, but it was distressed. To me, it looked like a floor sample that ( Read more... )

This brings to mind the first time I saw Furniture On The Mend on Philly PBS. Joe and Ed had purchased a cheap piece of unfinished pine furniture, and were planning to turn it into something valuable by finishing it. But before any varnish or upholstery was applied, they made a big production of "distressing" it, to give it that well-loved look.

They beat that poor bench with chains, smeared greasy sausages on it, and then Joe pulled out his "#1 grit sandpaper" -- half a cinder block.

Man, those guys were funny.

Ha! I just told Elora about that episode over the weekend. Loved it! Although, in the interest of accuracy, I believe that #1 grit sandpaper is in fact a Philadelphia cobblestone.
