There is something in the air today. It was a day of fail here. The only good points were eating dinner with my mom and the piece of pistachio cheesecake waiting in the fridge for me. The dinner with Mom was good not for the food (standard institutional issue), but for the newish couple that argued all through dinner about the chile con carnAAAAAY and listening to the woman try and get an extra dessert (she's horribly diabetic). Oh, and the guy who came to dinner in his black leather dinner jacket, trying to get someone to move from what was his usual spot at the table. The two at his table were in wheelchairs, and one of them appeared not even able to talk. Ah, assisted living dynamics.

Heh, sounds like a school/prison cafeteria to me!
Also, MMMM pistachio cheesecake! I love pistachio! I love cheesecake!
My first patient today is had horrible diabetes, but only when his wife was around (she gives him pudding and such when the nurses aren't looking). She doesn't seem to care that he's already had some toes and part of his foot amputated because of it...

Gads. What it wrong with people?! They gave this lady some low-sugar cheesecake (after she had had a cookie) and then she lied and said they never brought it and tried for ice cream.
I ended up pouring coffee in the dining room tonight and helping a woman find her room. I think the residents think I work there because I am young. Most of the residents' kids are my mom's age.

Yeah, I don't know. I lose more and more faith in people every day. I got into this to "save the world". I found out that we world really doesn't want saving. It wears its misery like a badge of honor.
Sheesh. How old is your mom? It's weird how people's lives can end up in so many different ways. Some stay active and youthful and impediment free and others...don't.
it was a light at the end (middle?) of a very weary physical/mental tunnel, i can tell you that! sounds like you had a pretty tough day.
and i though i don't always act on it, i'm a big believer in the mind/body connection, doc, so when the mental stress is too much...man, do i get tired. bone tired. crying inside tired. much as we hold the brain in esteem as a separate entity, we really don't understand the the toll it takes when it goes into overdrive, do we? or we do, but that damn intellect of ours doesn't allow for a little massage; if you worked on your feet all day on a bum knee or what have you, your knee would be screaming. you'd elevate it, ice it, heat it, rub it, give it some love.
i received a hug, so i'm glad to pass it along. elixir of life. take two and call me in the morning.

What is it about mental stress that can be so tiring? I'm absolutely knackered.
Thanks for the hug. It is sorely needed.
