The coldest inhabited place on Earth

Nov 19, 2015 10:04

I talked about not liking winter with cairistiona (I used to like winter, but not any more) yesterday, and today I stumbled upon this article. It's a must read/watch - you have to watch the video! :)))

The coldest town on Earth

*brrrrrr* I can't even imagine that!!!

Holy frozen fish sticks. That is...very cold. Also, WHY WOULD ANYONE CONTINUE TO LIVE THERE?

1933 coldest temp: -67C/-90F.

WHY.

WHY WOULD ANYONE CONTINUE TO LIVE THERE?

My point exactly.

Btw, I have a hypothesis about why they jump into that water. To get warmed!!! if the water is liquid, it's obviously warmed than the air...

And CUBES OF FROZEN REINDEER BLOOD?!?!?!?!

I had the same thought... if the air outside is -50F or whatever, then that water will feel like a warm bath!

And CUBES OF FROZEN REINDEER BLOOD?!?!?!?!

I read another article that said they mix the blood with macaroni. Which would make it sooooo much better. /sarcasm.

I do wonder what their average lifespan is, not eating anything but meat and apparently drinking a LOT of alcohol (who wouldn't, living there??)

Umm, why?

(For the record: I like freezing cold, I just don't like slippery roads)

Fascinating (and scary) detail.

On the other hand, almost *everything* in the link is fascinating and scary.

Oh wow, that's cold! What really tickled me was the fact that the narrator is from Minnesota (so he understands cold - LOL). In super cold places, they usually will pre-dig some burial plots for people who they think may not live through the winter. Otherwise, they often will just keep them in "cold storage" until the spring thaw. I suspect this place has permafrost, though, so "spring thaw" might be a misnomer and might never really go deep.

I noticed that the water appeared to be running water, not a frozen lake. The temperature of running water would be warmer than the outside. Here we have various "Polar Bear Clubs" where they chop a hole into the ice on the frozen lakes, and take a quick dip in. NOT my idea of a good time!

I knew you'd notice Minnesota-detail. :)

I suppose their life is really hard and complicated...

I'm glad I don't live there. 0C is cold here and we found -13 a nightmare!
