you can start by making posts friends only - just click the option at the bottom when you post.

But if you go into manage... friends you can set up different friends groups. I hardly ever use filters, I just make everything friends only (wouldn't want a workmate or a client stumbling onto my journal!) but I'm even careful what I say there now.
