how does all this work exactly?

1. PRETTY NEW IPOD IS HERE! :D

2. Unfortunately, I have spent the last hour or so wondering how the hell to sort out the music library because mine has always been just a total mess. A MESS. And I seem to have accidentally set the iPod to sync EVERYTHING, which means even the random songs I don't want on my iPod are being loaded. WTF. How am I going ( Read more... )

Are you using itunes?

I only add the music in that I want in and then I make playlists if I feel like it (I use playlists WAY more than my actually library/artists because playlists go with my mood/what I feel like listening to)

Oldish pic showing my top 50 playlist but you can see my playlists at the side? I totes need to update that picture too.....

Yup, using iTunes. Think I'll have to clean up the library, which currently has EVERYTHING playable on my computer. Kind of stupid, sigh.

Highlight everything then click delete. Go to wherever you store your music and drag and drop it all. If it doesn't have artists/albums listed with things then you highlight everything you want, right click and go to get info. Then you can put the artist name in and everything and it'll save it for all those songs :)

Playlists arent needed but can be used for mixes, favourite songs of stuff so you dont have to skip.... anything &hearts

Noted, I've just deleted everything from the library and am going to manually pack it full of stuff. Thanks!

I sync mine. I'm just selective of what I put on itunes, and remove stuff from my library if I don't want it there. :)

Sally doesn't sync, she just drags and drops individually.

I think what confused me is that iTunes said HAI LET ME GET EVERY SONG EVER ON YOUR COMPUTER, and I let it? Since it's new, I can probably just reset the thing and be more selective with my library. I really DON'T need the Kitty demo to randomly turn up on shuffle or something. ;)

OR I could just be like Sal and manually drag and drop. This is going to take me the rest of my LIFE to figure out, LOL!!

Ooh. What I mean is that I manually add to itunes, and it automatically syncs with the ipod itself, while Sally drags and drops indvidual songs from her library to the ipod.

So. My suggestion is to turn off things from auto-adding to itunes, select all in your library, delete (it doesn't delete files off your computer) and then add folders/albums/songs to your itunes as you like, and make THAT sync automatically to your ipod.

PS. My ipod's name is Kitty. :P Named after the character from Tipping the Velvet. Sally's is Flora, from Flora the Red Menace and you need to name yours now. :D

Oh, that's what I meant - what you do makes the most sense to me? I'll just set up my library manually and sync that. I can't wait to play and fill it up with way too many Julia songs lots of awesome music crack! :)

As long as your iPod isn't named after Kitty Genovese, I'm good. ;)

I was ridiculously boring and named it after the inscription: 'sing happy'. TOO BORING? I must think about what to name it then!!

I do a manual transfer. This is in part because I have a very old iPod with only 30 GB on it and I have around 50 GB of music, so I have to be really selective of what I transfer over, but I've always done it that way. I just work really hard to keep my files really well organized in iTunes and I make a LOT of playlists. I rarely actually play something by artist or album, although I have it organized enough that I could, but playlists are so much more useful.

Good luck!

It's crazy - I can already see myself spending WAY too much time sorting and organising these things because it doesn't make sense otherwise!! It's all messy and I HATE mess when it comes to my gadgets and stuff. Bah. ;) I shall definitely look into playlists - I think those probably make the most sense. Trying to keep on top of all the bootlegs is a bit crazy though. OMG.

Thank you! ;)

LOL Now you know why I said it would take me forever to make a Julia fanmix! I have a super crazy system for organizing my music so whenever I get a new boot or anything, I go through and rename all the files and then rename things in iTunes to get it organized and then bah...

Although I did start, the other day, to make a playlist of motivating belting to accompany me when I clean. If I ever finish that, perhaps I'll upload that for the like, 6 people on my flist who would care.

God, I think if I let myself get really obsessive about my music, I'd be here for the rest of my life. As it is, I've spent the last three hours just trying to load up the library. THIS IS INSANITY. My other MP3 player was never this complicated!! ;)

Oooh, I'd be interested in that belters' mix! It should heavily feature Ms Murney, shouldn't it...? Heh.

Not much flail for me, just a bucket-load of sadness :(

As for the iPod, I normally organise on iTunes and then sync manually. This is also safer--ensures that you don't wipe all the music off your computer by mistake. For eg, if your iTunes has been reset after a crash and is set to auto sync, then the moment you plug your iPod in, it syncs itself to the status of your iTunes; which is, basically, nadda. Zip. (Why yes, this does sound mighty familiar *headwall*)

Also, I might be getting a new one, I am srs. The one I am using now loses songs every time I turn it off, which means recharging and syncing every day. It is scaring me. However, I strolled over to apple.com and *gasp* NO MORE WHITE IPODS!!! WHAT IS THIS? Do they not make them white anymore? What color is yours? (I actually spent some time being upset over this today, lol.)

Awww, that's too bad. Still waiting on file to finish downloading.

Man, cleaning up the files is total insanity. TOTALLY. Thanks for the tip, oh dear. ;)

Definitely sounds like you need one! Why don't you get the silver? That's the one I have. It's rather pretty if I say so myself. ♥
