today is a flaily day of flailiness

Apr 27, 2008 05:32

1. Like pretty much every day of my life - at least when RL doesn't butt its stupid head into proceedings.

2. Went to one of the BEST concerts of my life this yesterday evening - Taiwanese rock band MAYDAY! was in town for the night, and I've been to all the concerts they've held here since I returned from university. Because they are made of TOO MUCH AWESOME to be believed. They're still ridiculously young (early thirties for the most part), but so so talented. They play their own music, write their own songs, and are just... incredible live. Seriously. I always say that, if you think Singapore audiences are buttoned-down and too boring at live performances (and for the most part they are), you should get yourself to a Mayday concert. Because whenever they're here, imagine about 8-10,000 people literally ON THEIR FEET for three hours, dancing and singing and just rocking out. I'm still aching from that cardio workout - I mean, I was sweating five songs into the show! Nuts. But fabulous.

3. AND. OMG. I LOVE my new recorder. It's beautiful and lovely and it made me a lovely lovely boot of the concert. I've spent the better part of the last few hours slicing out the best songs and cleaning them up. And if I do say so myself, the recording really sounds quite good. I'm astounded by the quality actually. Best part? You can occasionally hear me and
noldoparma having a mini RL flail moment, or giggling or just going, "OMG OMG OMG! THEY'RE SINGING THAT SONG?!" We were pathetic. And flaily. Anyway:

Mayday Live in Singapore ('Down to Earth' concert tour) - April 26, 2008

LOVE THIS BAND. LOVE THEM. THEY ARE THE BEST CRACK. Plus, live performances of new/rare songs!
Like Shi Tou's Yi Ya Ya, or their version of Yang Cong, the song they wrote for Aska Yang. LOVE LOTS.
4. While messing with my boot, I also started to fill out a Wicked meme snagged from
starhud5. I fail in many ways since I have only seen Wicked ONCE. Bah. I shall change that by June 15, though! Then I'd have seen Kerry again and SJB's last! :) Wicked fans on the flist (especially
alexia88, who is trying to tempt me away from sleep :P), play if you haven't already... or link me to your answers if you've already done the meme!

Have you ever seen Wicked on/in:

Broadway? No
National Tour? No
Chicago? No
Do you own a video bootleg of Wicked?: Indeedy. Julia Murney and Kendra Kassebaum's last on Broadway, as well as the epically clear video of their Atlanta tour with the understudy Fiyero of FAIL. I think I've another Julia/Kendra, and I'm pretty sure I have Idina and Kristin's last, though I haven't watched those yet.

*Your experiences*
Who have you seen play Elphaba? Kerry Ellis
Who have you seen play G(a)linda? Dianne Pilkington
Fiyero? Oliver Tompsett.
Nessarose? Katie Rowley Jones
Boq? James Gillan
Madame Morrible? Susie Blake
The Wizard? Nigel Planer
Who would you play? Elphaba. If I could hit those crazy notes eight times a week without causing my uterus to fall out, that is.

*This or That*
Elphaba or Glinda? Elphaba
Galinda or Glinda? Glinda
Nessarose or Boq? Nessarose
Fiyero or the Wizard? Fiyero
Witch's Father or the Professor? Witch's father
Dr. Dillamond or Madame Morrible? Dr. Dillamond
No One Mourns the Wicked or Finale? No One Mourns The Wicked
Dear Old Shiz or March of the Witch Hunters? March of the Witch Hunters
The Wizard and I or I'm Not That Girl? Painful painful choice. I don't like this meme. :( Just kidding. If I had to pick, The Wizard And I, because it's the traditional show-stopping number that comes a scant three songs into the show. It sets up so much to come with its 'unlimited' motif, and is actually ridiculously sad when you think about how Elphaba is so hopeful here about what she can do. And eventually finds out what she can't.
What Is This Feeling or One Short Day? What Is This Feeling, hands down. It's the song I couldn't stop singing to myself after I saw Wicked for the first time. And I LOVE how Elphaba and Galinda get into each other's faces through the WHOLE thing, mwahaha.
Something Bad or A Sentimental Man? A Sentimental Man. It's a nice tune, though not one of my favourites. Something Bad is filler (good filler, but filler nonetheless).
Dancing Through Life or Wicked Witch of the East? I don't even remember much of WWotE, so it'd have to be Dancing Through Life. Though I must say it wouldn't make my top five list of Wicked songs. Far too many others to choose from!
Popular or Thank Goodness? Thank Goodness. I didn't gain an appreciation for this until recently, whereas my Popular flail, especially as related to Kristin Chenoweth's adorable version, was strong from the start. But I LOVE Thank Goodness and what it says about the Glinda character, and how the song shows how much she has changed and grown up because of everything that's happened to her. The killer for me? When Glinda belts there are bridges you've crossed / you didn't know you'd crossed / until you've crossed - *sobs*
Defying Gravity or No Good Deed? OH GOOD GOD MOST EVIL QUESTION EVER. EVILLEST. EVER. EVER EVER. Okay, ask me at the START of my Wicked flail, and I'd have said Defying Gravity, without a doubt. Because it's so so fantastic - plus, has those last few notes of crazy amount of awesome. But I've since come to appreciate a good No Good Deed. It's such an incredible moment - as Elphaba kind of snaps from the pressure and the loss of Fiyero, and just sings the heck out over the crushing of her life's ambition and beliefs. Julia Murney, you are evil for showing me the light when it comes to the angsty potential of this song. I REFUSE TO CHOOSE.
Wonderful or I'm Not That Girl (Reprise)? INTG (Reprise) - so heartbreaking for Glinda. :(
For Good or As Long As You're Mine? Noooooooooooooooooo. EVIL QUESTION. Again, I refuse to choose. Except if you make me, I'd probably pick ALAYM (while crying all the way for not being able to choose FG), because Julia and Sebastian Arcelus are all kinds of SEXY SEX when they sing this song.

*Favourites*
Song? *cries* Um, Defying Gravity or No Good Deed
Quote? "Pink goes good with green!"
Moment? I can't honestly choose. Probably when Elphaba takes off.
Character? Elphaba
Performer to play Elphaba? In terms of who I'd LIKE to see play Elphaba, I'd have to say Julia Murney. Sorry, Idina. I love you, but if I have to pick, I think I'd want to see La Murney give her all to the role. Although obviously I'd be over the moon if Idina decided to return to the role for whatever reason.
G(a)linda? Kristin Chenoweth - vocally, I still like her performance best of all the Glindas I've heard. Though I love Kendra's manic-ness. She's fabulously wacky.
Fiyero? SEBASTIAN ARCELUS IS MY BOYFRIEND.
Nessarose? Don't much mind at this point - I've only seen ONE Nessarose and spend most of my time paying attention to other characters, you know?
Boq? Ditto
Madame Morrible? Ditto
Dr. Dillamond? Ditto
The Wizard? Ditto
5. It's taken me over an hour to complete this post, wtf. And I'm still waiting for my uploads so I can link them. FAAAAAIIIIlL. I'm supposed to go for a ridiculously expensive brunch with my friends at 1130H tomorrow. I will get, like, four hours of sleep at this rate. Though I am so hyper from concert and flail I don't think I COULD sleep, lol.

6. Oh, before I forget - I'm a little bit obsessed with the new Annie Leibovitz picture of Julianne Moore, which I discovered through
iwant_sprinkles. It's... gorgeous, and part of the Reimagining Disney series. Julianne as Ariel from The Little Mermaid - SO PRETTIFUL, OMG. Click on the icon to see full-sized photo. I'm kind of in love with it.
