How much enjoyment I get from a character on the screen or on the page doesn't actually match up that well with how much I want to write fanfic for them, I've noticed. It's not often that I end up wanting to write about character I dislike or am completely "meh" about, though it does happen, but it's really common that some of the characters I ( Read more... )

I find that I write the most for the characters I love because I write the most meta for the characters I love. I like writing meta even more than I like writing fic, and when I latch on to a character, I like trying to puzzle out how they think and what makes them tick. Once I've done that, I find it much easier to inhabit their heads for a bit and write them. I'm not really comfortable writing a character until I've done the watch --> meta --> fic exercise, though I've leaped in meta-less a couple of times.

That said, I've written for characters I'm lukewarm about or just sort-of like before, but I still need to devote some thought to them before I do, which ironically usually means I end up liking them more. :D

I voted #2 (in as much as most of the fic I write seems to involve Martha, Ace or Romana) but there exist characters I love that I don't have any particular urge to write fic about (Leela, for example, and Donna to some extent after the first flush of ooh! shiny new! about her). And there's quite a large pool of characters that I want to write about but generally can't make fic of them work (Ace, for a long long while though I seem to be over it now; Nyssa/Tegan, most of the time; and I really wish I could work out how to write Faction Paradox fic that wasn't completely awful).

Now as I don't write fic anymore, I've answered the poll for what characters I draw most often. Although I do many requests and commissions, I do find that I draw my favorite characters and eras somewhat more often. I certainly find that I'm more compelled to do more little details and be more of a perfectionist about those pieces.
