i think it's okay that you're sharing this lady's writing, because we don't know who she is, and we can appreciate her thoughts in an objective (albeit voyeuristic) way. kind of like a livejournal entry. reading thoughts of someone you may not know and finding the beauty in hearing those thoughts for what they are - thoughts outside of a person, hovering, floating, getting lost and sounding lovely sometimes.
i lost personal writing when my computer was stolen last year. i wonder if the thief actually read anything - rather unlikely, since he/she would just want to sell the computer. anyway i felt pretty naked to know that certain lengthy emails to good friends about emotional times were lost and could possibly be read by someone else. i felt mostly exposed because my identity (email, name, address, etc) was associated with all the correspondence. if i was anonymous i don't think i would have minded.
always nice to read your infrequent but interesting entries. :)
i remember reading about that last spring, when your computer was stolen. so rotten. i can't imagine not only losing important files but some creepy asshole having them. did you have anything backed up by chance? i know that wouldn't take the ick factor out of knowing the original stuff is out there somewhere, but at least it would be something. i think losing my email would probably be the most frustrating, maybe even moreso than all the digital pix. i've kept all my email sent&received since 95 in one megagigantic folder-- it would be like the motherlode of personal/work-related/financial info. yikes. anyway all that to say, i know it was a year ago, but i'm sorry it happened.
as a musical aside, what has mahogany been up to? any chance of playing austin again anytime soon? :) also, are you into skywave at all? i just picked up a copy of their new album synthstatic and it is so good! so much mbv+jamc-style fabulosity-- i've been listening to it nonstop the past couple days.
thanks for the kind words about the burglary. i was just reading an old journal entry about it because it happened almost exactly a year ago. i actually had just backed up most of my files, but not my email. the first thing i thought of when my powerbook was stolen was all the sweet emails to and from boys past. :P silly?
i doubt we'll be trekking to texas anytime soon. :) i haven't heard skywave... i'll have to check them out.
I read a few weeks ago (I think at pitchforkmedia.com) about this skywave album you mention. and its been on my music list since then! seeing a second 'thumbs up' always helps. I'll have to get it. I wanted to do some online ordering this weekend anyways.
(hey did you by any chance ever track down that old inxs song, "don't change" ? just curious. I heard it earlier this week and I remembered I had commented about it some time ago.)
and what a find this is. I can only think of an old arrow head I found once in a forest when I was a kid that I thought to be so significant -at the time anyway. but I've lost writings from high school english classes that I do wish I still had, and a bike while in 6th grade. it was stolen in january (I had just received it for xmas). but (*knocks on wood*) I can't recall many personal lost items or great finds even, that have happened at all in recent years. *knocks again*
What a beautiful and fascinating find! I'm glad you shared it with us.
Sometime last year, I left my moleskine diary at a cafe. I use it more as a datebook than diary, but I was still nervous that somebody would scrutinize my to-do lists and crossed-out plans.
When I was younger, I'd make little notes to strangers on the inside covers of all my journals. Disclaimers and apologies and explanations.
(sorry for the delay in reply!) that sounds similar to what happened to me a few years ago-- i was in ny, my mom was in town, and i met her at some café way uptown that i knew nothing of. as it went i was way early and bided my time scribbling in my (also) moleskin notebook... really embarrassing personal stuff too (what can i say, things were angsty at the time), in addition to all kinds of scribbled personal info (account #s, phone #s etc.). of course i left it behind smack on the table. unfortunately i didn't realize it until 11:30pm by which time i was back home in brooklyn. of course i hightailed it one hour back to the café. the place was closing at midnight and there was a very blond couple sitting in my original seat, thoroughly perusing the pages together. what embarrassment. i pled my case, snatched it back from them and ran back to the train. i'm still glad to have it back, but bleh-- i'd almost have preferred to lose it completely rather than know people were reading and poking fun!
hey :) it seems weird to me with your address inside that whoever found it didn't mail it back to you. i know that if i found anything with an address in it i'd post it back in a heartbeat no matter what the contents were!
