I remember reading Are You There God, It's Me Margaret when I was young. I was completely shocked by how frank it was about periods and all of the lovely little surprises girls get when they hit puberty. Reading it was kind of like a rite of passage, I think my tastes in books became much more "grown-up" after that. :D

Did you have the updated version of Margaret? I remember being totally confused and a little afraid of the descriptions of the 1970s santitary pads.

Judy Blume was pretty much responsible for all of my early sex education. I remember buying a copy of "Forever" when I was like twelve thinking it was like her other books. Man, was I ever surprised. I still can't hear the name Ralph without snickering.

I just looked Forever up. How did I miss that one? My husband always talks about Then Again, Maybe I Won't as being a big awakening of teen issues for him.

And Jean Louise/Scout is one of my favorite literary characters--I love Atticus too (don't most people)? And Olive is just so fantastic. She's just so happy and energetic and adorable, and the scene where she finds out she's in the pageant and runs around screaming and telling her stuffed animals makes me endlessly happy <3
