Charles closes the file and pours himself another drink. He keeps pouring until the bottle is as empty as the rest of him.

He’s caught by the memory of a silly sweet girl who liked to drape her head around the gauzy curtains in her mother’s dressing room and play bride. Dressed in her white cotton nightgown, Penelope would hold a porcelain vase full of hothouse flowers and march down her imaginary aisle. She could only take six steps before the veil would slip from her head and return to the window.

Back when things were much simpler, that’s how Charles had imagined her future with Hume; a marriage taking her no further than the real world equivalent of six steps. He’s not too proud a man to appreciate the irony. Even though Penelope’s travelled so far from where she started, if anything, by becoming Mrs. Hume in 2006 instead of 1996, her world has become smaller than he could ever have foreseen.

He looks at the contents of the file one more time. Port entry records for the sailboat, Fortitude. A rental agreement for a house in Río Grande. A marriage certificate signed by Father Adolfo. There are also twelve photographs of the newlyweds, hand in hand, shopping at a market. Charles is fond of one photo in particular where Penelope looks to be having a conversation with a sheep, while Hume stands by bemused. The expression on her face is one of pure innocence and it reminds him so much of the little girl who once sat on his knee and not the woman who made good on her ultimatum. He’d like to be able to frame it, put it on his desk, and proudly tell the world, “You remember my daughter, Penelope.”

Like so many things, it is not be. It would be foolish to keep any evidence of the couple who now call themselves Stephanie and Timothy Hopkins and live at the end of the world. It has to be dispatched with, much like the employee who returned from Argentina with this proof. Without another glance, Charles tosses the file into the fire. He watches the papers dissolve into flames and settle into ash. This act is the only wedding gift he can give his daughter.
