Summary: AU. Jensen has the flu.
A/N 1: Continuation of my  college!AU. It's not really important that you read that first, though. I didn't realize it'd been a year since I wrote in this verse. It was fun to get back to it!
A/N 2: This is for enablelove since she's feeling sick and wanted some h/c. I hope this helps you feel better, bb. <333

“Carter! Gracie, get back here! Leave your daddy alone!”

Jensen had about a minute warning before two small whirlwinds invaded the room, jumping on the bed and making as much noise as a herd of elephants. He gasped as several pointy limbs got him in the thigh and stomach.

“Guys, come on. Be careful. You know he doesn’t feel well,” Jared admonished, grabbing Carter around the middle and lifting him off the bed. He settled Carter on his hip and held tight when he tried to squirm away.

“Daddy!” Gracie yelled. She was sitting by his knees, absentmindedly patting his leg. She had a purple grape juice moustache and Jensen didn’t want to know what stuck in her hair.

“You don’t have to shout, baby. I’m right here,” Jensen told her, then sneezed so hard it felt like his brains were rattling around in his skull. He hated being sick.

“Tissue!” Carter exclaimed, bouncing in Jared’s arms and swinging his legs back and forth.

Jensen smiled wryly. He and Jared were working with the kids on the whole germ thing--sneezing into your elbow, covering your mouth when you cough, washing your hands, and all that--but it was slow going. At four and five, they couldn’t quite grasp the importance. Seemed like something was sticking, though.

Reaching for the box beside him on the bed, he blew his nose, adding to the ever-growing pile of used tissues surrounding him.

“We want our bedtime story,” Gracie announced.

“Gracie, I can read you a story tonight. We need to let your daddy rest,” Jared said, ruffling her hair.

“But I want Daddy to do it!” She pouted, crossing her arms over her chest and sticking out her bottom lip.

“Me too!” Carter piped up, once again trying to escape Jared’s tight grasp.

“It’s okay, Jay. I can do it. But only one story,” Jensen stated, and both kids beamed. “Go pick one out and come back here, okay?”

They whooped together and raced out of the room, chattering to each other about which book to choose. Normally they’d all pile into one of the kids’ beds, but Jensen hadn’t left his own in days, having been struck down with a terrible case of the flu.

Sitting on the side of the bed, Jared placed his palm on Jensen’s forehead and then his cheek. His cool hands felt amazing on Jensen’s feverish skin, and he leaned into the touch.

“You seem a little cooler,” Jared mentioned. “How are you feeling?”

“A little less like death warmed over.”

He made a tsking noise and ran his fingers through Jensen’s slightly sweaty hair. “You don’t have to read to the kids if you don’t want to, Jen. I can handle it tonight.”

“No, I’m fine.” Of course, that was when he had a coughing fit, proving his words a lie. Jared spent the next minute rubbing his back, then handed him his juice.

“Jen--”

“I’ll do it,” he insisted. His sore throat could last through one children’s book. “It’s not just because it’s our routine, you know? I like spending that time with Gracie and Carter.” It was the one time on the weekend that he always knew he’d have with them. They were growing up so fast and between work, school, and Gracie being at Becca’s during the week, Jensen felt like he was missing so much of their lives.

Jared nodded, kissing him on the forehead. “Okay.”

Gracie and Carter came barreling back in then, Gracie carrying a brightly colored book. They climbed onto the bed and snuggled under the covers, one on each side of Jensen, and Jared lay down across the foot of the bed. Jensen opened the thin book and started reading. Gracie put her head on Jensen’s shoulder, while Carter slipped one of his small hands into Jensen’s. He and Jared exchanged a look over the kids’ heads, smiling.

Jensen barely made it halfway through the book before all three of them were asleep.
