I really wanted to kill no one (well, logically Theron should have died, but I refused to sacrifice him because he might be needed for antoehr novel) - I just wanted Basil to be all disgraced & nutso & end up deep in the forest living in a little hut, talking to himself, and maybe teaching local woodcutters' children their ABCs . . . it still gives me pleasure to think of it! But Delia found that so harrowing that she decided Death was preferable.

So there he lies.
