I decided not to see the film; I'm not as sure as you are that it couldn't be filmed well, but the consensus that this wasn't it was so broad I didn't want to interfere with my love of the book.

Yes, that's how I felt. It may be a perfectly good movie - but I need the book to live for me as text alone.
