Very Nice Things!

Author joelyskye  has put Swordspoint at the top of her Top Ten list of faves on elisa_rolle  's LJ, "Reviews & Ramblings" --  right on up there with Mary Renault , Laura Kinsale, & omigod Dorothy Dunnett!  Dunnett was a huge influence on me; I took her Lymond books as a personal challenge, and learned a lot.

And I can't stop re-reading this exquisite review of The ( Read more... )

Those are great reviews - thoughtful, deep, and clearly written by someone who has actually read the books in detail. I particularly like the analysis of Alec and his grief in The Man With the Knives.

BTW, I've just read Thomas the Rhymer, which I also liked. The ending reminded me a lot of The Death of the Duke.

Thank you -- to paraphrase Steve Brust, it's wonderful to read a comment by someone who gets it.

You made my day.

Oh my stars! I absolutely adored your review of Swordspoint, especially where you wrote: "They are not a particularly romantic couple, but there is no doubt that there is something deep and necessary to both of them there, and, as spiky and tempestuous as their affair might be, there is plainly a great deal of gentleness and compromise between them, as well as a kind of protective ferocity in the face of outside danger. "

which is the most perfect description of Richard and Alec's relationship. *fangurls you madly*

But of course Swordspoint belongs at the head of much-loved book lists.
It's an odd, the way Lymond works. I've gradually fallen out of love with the series over time as I see more of the indulgences within it, and yet it remains a reading experience that mattered in its time. Same with the Wimsey books.

I just finished reading Swordspoint, and the additional story of The Death of the Duke. I loved them both - and this makes me a bit wary of reading The Man With the Knives. Not because I doubt it would be amazing, but because I'm very much a fan of Richard and Alec, and the mere thought of of Alec's grief is upsetting to me.

Oh, who am I kidding? Of course I'll read it. You've got me hooked now. But if I end up crying, I'll know whom to blame.

I doubt that you'll cry -- the narrative gives us a little distance to shield us from that. It's only in retrospect that you really understand the magnitude of the tragedy.

And thank you, Ellen, for your very kind words.

That was inspired by Terri Windling's supern Endicott Studio site which has a gold coloured William Morris paper border on its pages as the border gives a more professional look to the reviews. Being named what we are, I thought a green colored border made more sense.
