Exactly a week later, Harry once again made his way down to the hall at eight o’clock. He had agreed to meet Draco and spend the day with him. The blond had insisted that Harry get up at what he called a ‘reasonable time’ so that they had more than a couple of hours together.
Harry hadn’t mentioned it to Hermione or Ron, but secretly he was extremely nervous about spending the day with his former rival. He had made his opinion of Draco clear to him, but he had no idea how the other man felt about him. For all he knew, he could still blame him for his father’s death. It seemed to have completely slipped Harry’s mind that Draco had accepted his offer of possible friendship, and so logically must have forgiven Harry the past.
Wiping his now sweaty palms on his trousers, Harry walked into the Great Hall. Once again, he went straight past the Gryffindor table and stopped opposite Draco. “Hi,” he said.
“Hi.”
Harry slid onto the bench with more confidence than he had done the previous week. Draco had assured him when they arranged the day that none of the other Slytherins would object to his presence. Harry hadn’t been that worried anyway as all of the students remaining in that house had been sympathetic to him during the way, but there was still lingering tensions between them and the rest of the school. He knew that nobody would go against Draco, Prince of the Slytherins, though.
Harry took some toast and began to butter it. “Did you want to do anything specific?” he asked.
Draco shook his head. “I wasn’t sure what you’d like or dislike,” he admitted. “I was going to ask you what you wanted to do.”
“Oh,” said Harry awkwardly. “Well, do you just want to find a spot where we can talk for a while? I mean, I’d like to get to know you. It seems logical.” He gave a small shrug.
“Alright,” Draco told him.
They ate their breakfast in near silence. Harry wasn’t sure if he’d felt more uncomfortable in his life. He realised that he really did know nothing about the other man and he wasn’t sure how to start a conversation. What common ground did they have?
As they were sitting there, Draco’s owl swooped down to deliver the newspaper. “You’re late,” he reprimanded the bird who hooted loudly at him and flew off. Draco unfolded the paper and read the headlines. Silently, he passed it to Harry.
The front page screamed at him, ‘Death Eater Trials’. Harry looked at Draco. The expression on the other man’s face was fixed. “Good riddance,” the blond said.
Harry skimmed quickly through the article. There was nothing much to report: all of the cases were pretty much open and shut. He slid the paper back across the table.
“I guess that means that the war is finally over,” Draco said. He sounded almost relieved. “That’s the end.”
Harry nodded. “It’s over,” he agreed.
Nodding, the blond continued to eat his breakfast.
