Near the hearth in the living room.

Renoir’s 1909 Léontine et Coco, which depicts the artist’s son Claude, is displayed in the living room. Garbo had a passion for art and antiques and began collecting works by Renoir in the 1940s. Louis XV fauteuils attributed to Jean-Baptiste Tilliard flank the fireplace, where late-18th-century famille rose roosters are set alongside 19th-century Chinese porcelain boxes. The taboret is Louis XVI.

" Her apartment on 52nd Street and the East River was a sanctuary of peace and imagination. A small, square vestibule awaited you as you got off the elevator. It was simply, logically decorated - a sufficiently large mirror, a table for mail and packages, a huge umbrella stand, and a painting of waterfowl to look at until you were received. It revealed little of life beyond the always closed entrance door.

Inside there was color - roses, salmons, greens. There was nothing black or white in the apartment: she thought they lacked warmth. There were paintings everywhere, even behind the draperies, and beautiful furniture, carved, painted, inlaid. "

As soon as she bought the apartment in 1953, she installed the bookcases and a washed green knotty pine panelling in the drawing room. She designed special niches for the Renoirs she had purchased in the 1940s. Renoir’s tender portrait of a governess reading to his youngest son, called Léonline et Coco, always hung above the fireplace.

A Louis XVI trumeau in the living room.

Of her legendary desire for privacy, she remarked in a 1928 interview-one of the few she ever granted-“I wanted to be alone, even as a child. I used to go to a corner and think... Thinking means so much, even to small children.” A panel painted after François Boucher adorns the upper part of a Louis XVI trumeau in the living room.

"She bought at galleries, at auction, at odd places. One day she passed a decorator’s shop in the neighborhood and spied some handmade silk tulips. They were very unusual, just the right color and shape for a pair of Ming jars she prized. She asked the proprietor if she could buy them. He said they were not for sale, but he would give them to her if she would sign one of her photographs. She said she never signed anything. He gave her the flowers anyway."(c)Gray Horan

Renoir’s Enfant Assis en Robe Bleu (Portrait of Edmond Renoir, Jr.), which dates from 1889, hangs above a Régence parquetry commode in the living room. The circa 1835 Staffordshire equestrian figures stand alongside one of a pair of Han pottery vases mounted as lamps. The corner chair is Louis XV.

A hall and elevator vestibule.

A carpet Garbo designed lines a hall, where a painting by her brother, Sven Gustafson, hangs above a Louis XV banquette. It was director Mauritz Stiller who brought then-19-year-old Greta Gustafson to the United States in 1925. A three-time Oscar nominee, Garbo was given a special 1954 Academy Award for her “unforgettable screen performances.”

The “closet room.”

The “closet room,” which Garbo created from a small library, is highlighted by one of the carpets she designed for her 1962 series, Birds in Flight. Over the closet is part of her collection of hats; others are stacked on a carved and painted Russian provincial tea table from circa 1880. Garbo chose the upholstery and drapery fabric, which features African tribal motifs.

"This is a very personal collection. It reflects totally one person’s taste, vision, preference. One day, some years ago, we were sitting in her living-room. “I love color,” she told me. “I want the room to sing. How can one not understand? With me it’s inborn, I just know. I didn’t have to learn it. This room is my creation and I think it’s pretty good. You must learn to trust yourself."(c)Gray Reisfield

"The auction of her collection is an important event - and a sad one, as it marks the end of her Iife. I very much hope that the new owners will think of her often as they admire these remarkable paintings."
