I think that the farther and farther you get from the heartache, and the more solidly you know that your mother's issues were not your shortcomings, and that mismatched love can happen through no one's fault... the better your chances at finding someone to love who will love you in return.
You don't have to be looking for "the one." Finding a good woman to spend time with, to become fond of... that seems like a worthy goal in and of itself. Anything more would be an additional blessing.
Thank you for such honesty. Love is terrifying, but I think a life of loneliness is more so. What you are doing is brave, but I the world is wide and full of amazing individuals - and bad seeds - but there is someone out there for you. Probably several someone's who would do nicely, you just have to find them!
A friend, much older than me, once told me that "humans were never meant to live alone." At the time I was married and vehemently disagreed. Now unmarried, I can feel the weight of what he expressed, and I hope that you'll find some exchange for your efforts to love and be loved.
That aside, what a way to express the pickle of such pursuits. The tug between whether we deserve what we want and the need behind the want is really nicely expressed here.
There is so much sensitivity, and personal growth in what you say about how you would approach dating now, my hope is that you find someone who has the same goal.
Your entries are always so thoughtful and beautifully written.
I always wanted to write a book called The Unlovable. I expect there are millions who could relate.
