I know at least part of it isn't fictional, and I want you to know I relate to it a lot. My work trauma sounds pretty freaking stupid in comparison to having seen people die in the World Trade Center, but nonetheless, depression, anxiety and possible PTSD (my therapist is not big on diagnoses) led to abysmal work performance and nearly getting fired.
And if I'd been asked to do that sort of roleplay... yeahhhhhh. That's the kind of "advice" my mom would give me, too. My parents aren't even dead, and if I needed advice or a listening ear from a parent, I'd find someone else to talk to.
Did you shrink not know what your mother had been like? That response is exactly what I would have expected, and I can't imagine how it could ever have helped unless in a 'hitting the bottom of despair and coming back up' kind of way.
I have an idea why your shrink asked you to stop doing that particular exercise. But Christ, to not get that sort of support from your mother (whether she was alive or not) is just... ugh.
I'm glad that you're in a better place now than you were in 2004, even if things were really rough for a while, there. <3
