I had a similar "distraction" at the bookstore on the morning that my eldest sister phoned me to let me know that my mother had died. A courtly gentleman from out of town had made an appointment to come and see me that day on book-buying business, and I had to put on the mirthful and merry front that has made a lot of first-time customers become repeat customers.

I did all right, dishing out the old razzle-dazzle, so I am told by my staff, until the courtly fellow asked me, "And how's the family?"

After that, I admit, 'tis a bit of a blur.

My problem is that I *DO* remember my reaction... ellakite March 27 2011, 17:33:09 UTC
... and like I said: I'd rather not talk about it.

Well, just about everybody has to face this some day... ellakite March 28 2011, 03:32:02 UTC
... but I'm not exaggerating about how little time there was between the two calls. No more than 5 minutes, perhaps as little as 2 minutes. Talk about having no time to prepare...

edited to correct a *major* typo.

Been there, done that. My dad died about 15 years ago. *hugs*

... and it's never an "easy" experience. But, man-o-MAN, I'm not exaggerating about how quickly those two phone calls came together -- they were less than five minutes apart, perhaps as few as two minutes. So I was really in *NO* condition to deal with Lisa's inquiry...

edited for honesty. not that the time change matters all *that* much...

I can't imagine even how you had managed to pick up the Lisa call!

Beautifully written. <3

A) We didn't have Caller ID, so how was I supposed to know it wasn't a family member calling?

B) Even if I had known who it was, my "excuse" for being at home was that I was going to be fielding calls for the family. So how the hell could I *NOT* answer the phone? The information Lisa told me was important to my sister...

I thank you for the compliment about the writing.
