The nerd who tried to pick up my co-worker Alison on Friday did show up again on Tuesday to let her know what he thought of the book. Alison doesn't read Harry Potter, but she sure can nod politely.

Just finished the New Potter and thought it was great...the books have a wonderful life affirming quality about them and are not too sappy or dumb down for children. I keep it in the back of my mind that the book was not written for adults. I find them able to address the subject of Life and death squarely while advocation that our friends and family do help us carry on ...if you allow them to help. It also has a great message of self help. The growth of the Hogwarts students is also handled very well. I liked when Ron commented that the new student seem to be getting "smaller". I remember thinking the same thing! Like my frieds and I were alot bigger at that age or more mature.

On a complete and utter tangent, I really, really take issue with people who claim that they're not really children's books. Just because many adults enjoy Harry Potter does not mean that these aren't children's books. Sure dark elements crop up in the books, especially in the most recent volumes, but darkness has long had a role in children's literature. Some people act like it's a big deal that Rowling kills off characters, but children's literature is strewn with bodies. While I mourned the deaths in Order of the Phoenix and Half-blood Prince, I was also glad for them since the threat of evil would seem pretty toothless without serious losses.
