I think I meant to say "civic" rather than "social." I'm not sure. I guess what I am saying is - why exactly do we have social norms? And furthermore, why are they considered so important? And also, why do we have etiquette? And why do people feel obliged to conform to social structures or unspoken rules? What if just suddenly no one cared ( Read more... )

I think it's to try to make sure we exist comfortably, without hurting people's feelings. It's probably an outshoot of the animal kingdom--if you're polite and easygoing, you're not being aggressive or challenging.
