Fanfic_rants are made out of assholes anyway -- asshole-covered assholes with asshole filling. (Which would, um, be an insult to the asshole community, really) Personally, I just ignore them. (Same with scans_daily, really)
Heeeeeh, meta-ing is both helpful and frustrating when it comes to writing. It's helped clarify my ideas so I don't have to yank my hair out over characterization, but it also gives me less leeway -- I can't write characters in a way that I don't actually see them. (This is why I almost never write Padmé.)
Well, I'm in the original-ideas-for-the-plot boat, so I have an advantage there, I think (I didn't have to make up the plot! ...exactly). I never had any doubt that he loved Luke c. ESB (dude, he lied to Palpatine's face! and the longing when he called for him telepathically was ... yeah), but the exact form it takes? Ehhh.
Interesting and infuriating is an excellent description, heh.
Heh, yeah. And when he's all "how is this possible???" even though he clearly knows who Luke is (and "he's just a boy!" <3 <3) it's just ... right, you can see the redemptive arc coming a mile off.
but if ROTJ never existed we would never have heard Luke SAY that so, does that make it ESB canon or ROTJ canon? LOL
Yes! This was the specific issue I had when I was outlining Revenge, actually.
I suppose you can read a lot into the way Luke calls out to Vader telepathically too.
Ahahaha, yeah. That moment when he just has that befuddled Father I'm like "it's just...SOMEONE LEFT THE ONIONS OUT, OKAY?" So there's the foundation for some kind of something afterwards, it just got rather shortchanged by canon. *sadface*
