Innnntroducing Shallan's second-in-command in Sickbay, the medical officer who often rules the night shifts with a light but sardonic hand, the doc with the extra large eyes who sees all -- in infrared and ultraviolet: Doctor Sorq Fnehwll!

Title: Curious Cat-like Being Is Curious
series: Andorians

Some incautious crewmember had brought a case of Sklarian fever home from shore leave, so this day found Shallan in one of the medical labs closest to Sickbay, programming vaccines and specialized rehydratants into the synthesizers. Skyleaper to-Ennien, her head nurse, bustled in carrying more samples to culture.

"Four more cases confirmed, Doctor. None of the command staff yet, strangely. Oh! Ensign Nomura refractured that bone in his hand."

Shallan's antennae went straight up. "How?"

"Apparently," said the nurse with great relish, "he decided to play some gravball today. Some sort of ongoing shipwide tournament?" He swivelled his ears towards Shallan, the better to hear her hissing curses on Nomura's stupidity in Andorian, Hestv, and (to Skyleaper's great pleasure) Sivaoan. Multilingual wrath was the best kind.

"Doctor Fnehwll has him under a restraint field to work on it," Skyleaper added.

"Mandatory counseling," Shallan proclaimed.

"Noted. May I suggest banning him from all recreation areas, unless accompanied by a responsible adult?" Skyleaper's tail twitched gleefully as he tapped commands into one of the lab devices.

"I'll consider it. Meanwhile, since he disobeyed a direct order, he gets to be confined to quarters for four days, without visitation, except for counseling."

"Fnehwll said three."

"I'm saying four," Shallan reiterated firmly. "He had three last time. Tell him that if he doesn't let it fully heal this time, I'm chopping off his hand at the wrist and growing him a new one."

"Will do. So, you're going to start your first litter soon."

It took a moment for the subject change to register, and then Shallan gave her nurse -- and friend -- a long-suffering look.

"Andorians don't have litters, 'Leaper. You know that."

He turned back to face her, eyes bright and whiskers forward. "I notice you don't deny it."

"I can tentatively confirm that we have entered the preliminary planning stages for our first offspring. Singular." Shallan watched with barely concealed amusement as Skyleaper did a dance in the middle of the lab, without knocking over a thing.

"Excellent! But why not have at least twins? Multiple births have so many benefits to the children in terms of social development --"

"One. Or we'll be overwhelmed, as new parents. How did you know?"

"Oh, I noticed Sorq has started brushing up on Andorian reproduction-related medical procedures."

Shallan snorted softly, then held up a container of vaccine. "Here, take this to Sorq and have her dose Nomura before he's escorted out. And tell her to stop leaving her PADDs where inquisitive nurses can stick their tails!" As soon as Skyleaper had hold of the case, she gave one of his wrists a warning squeeze. "Keep our plans a secret until my bondgroup makes an official Declaration of Intent, understood?"

"Yes, doctor." Impishly, he bent down and nuzzled the side of her head. "I'm just happy for you!"

When he was gone, Shallan took a moment to reflect that she never should have made that bet with Sril about how long it would take Skyleaper to find out.
