Author's Notes: This is a random ficlet thing, featuring three of the 'New Mutants' (Berserker, Iceman, and Cannonball).
Ray stayed after his last class to ask the teacher a few things about an upcoming assignment he was having trouble figuring out, so when he headed to his locker, Bobby and Sam were already on their way to meet him there. They caught up with him in the hallway, Bobby jogging forward with a, "Ray! Hey, Ray!" while Sam easily kept stride with his long-legged walk.
While Ray had been expecting to meet up with them, he wasn't expecting it when they flanked him, Sam throwing an arm over his shoulders and Bobby getting a surprisingly firm grip around his waist. And while he was used to Sam's easy smile and Bobby's puckish grin, the combination of these with the look they shot each other when they got hold of him would have made the hairs on the back of Ray's neck stand up, if he hadn't shaved them off.
"Ready?" Bobby asked, and then he and Sam broke into song. Ray would have been stunned silent by the surreality of it all if only what they were caroling into the milling students of the hallway wasn't, "I sing the body electric, I celebrate the me yet to come!"
His face clouded over. What did they think they were doing? Did they want to out him as a mutant to all of Bayview High? He would have shrugged them off, but with a practiced-seeming move, they swung him in a turn that left him facing one of the bulletin boards found throughout the school. This one was the "COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES" board, and was currently dominated by a huge colour poster advertising a one-night revival showing of the movie FAME on Saturday.
Bobby slipped free and leaned against the board, still grinning.
"So? You interested?"
Ray looked from him to Sam, who clapped Ray on the shoulder in a way that was usually meant to be encouraging.
"We thought it might be a fun thing to get a group together and go see. And I'd like to see it just once without my brother giving the world a running commentary about the music."
Embarrassed that he'd almost lost his temper at them -- again -- Ray nodded.
