Happy Fourth Day of Christmas

Today is Childermas, or the Feast of the Holy Innocents, in Western European tradition (Syrian and Chaldean tradition observed it yesterday and the Eastern Orthodox will observe it tomorrow).

The haunting "Coventry Carol" was written as part of a mystery play, The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors, that commemorated the events:

My mum is up visiting in Deep this holiday season and just happened to mention that tomorrow will be the Holy Day of the Innocents, although she said it in Spanish/Tagalog. She mentioned that she would give us oranges, although traditionally when she was a child, gifts of "exotic" nuts (chestnuts, brazil nuts) and oranges were hidden treats. We weren't fond of nuts as children. I don't have any recollection of this tradition, I don't think I ever understood it was a special day, or that the oranges were a special treat. My maternal grandfather was Spanish, some of his traditions, including the Advent candles were not part of local customs in the Philippines.
