Day Two.
Waking up to discover that Torchwood has been reduced to a hole in the ground was something Sarah Jane could have done without. As is a phone call from Lucy Saxon.
“I’m sorry, you want me to do what?”
A suppressed sigh from the other end of the line.
“You have an alien super computer and a boy genius at your disposal. Use them. Presuming these aliens don’t blow you up too, but you are a little more discreet than Torchwood were, and a far, far smaller threat. Look, I am e-mailing you all the info I have, including intergalactic SOS codes and contact details for the Shadow Proclamation. I’m guessing these aliens have set up some kind of shield around the planet - Harry did that too - so try to find a way around it. I was counting on Jack, but he’s obviously lost all his equipment now, and he hasn’t bothered to so much as call.”
“Lucy…” Sarah Jane takes a deep breath. “That blast- nothing could have survived that. I know Jack is… immortal, but…”
Until then, Sarah Jane had never realised that you could hear a sneer.
“Oh please. The sun could explode, and Jack Harkness would walk away unscathed, trust me. Anyway, let me know how you get on.”
“Listen-” Sarah Jane speaks quickly, to stop the other woman from hanging up, “-I have been thinking. You know how there are... fixed points in time. Maybe this is one of those...”
“Gosh, Sarah, that never occurred to me.” Lucy’s voice is both condescending and filled with sarcasm, and Sarah Jane isn't sure which is more annoying. “If this was a fixed point, I would have been told. If it was a fixed point likely to affect my son in any way, the Doctor would have made sure that we were three galaxies away by now. No. We are on our own, and we need your great hero. So get cracking.”
And with that Lucy hangs up.
Sarah Jane looks at the phone for a long time, then sighs deeply. The woman is insufferable, but there’s no denying her logic. And Sarah Jane can’t blame her for being worried about little Alex.
“Luke!” she calls. “You’re not going to school today!”
Day Three.
