I've been trying to make my peace with that episode for awhile now, because so much of it bothered me. This made me feel a little better about it, having Sawyer have this moment to take it all in and adjust and regroup, and to show how defeated he really felt.

Sawyer's decision not to tell Kate is definitely heroic in its way; it's also sad as well because it shows how very defeated he was, how he thought they really didn't stand a chance. But at least he didn't want her to feel that way, and that shows how much he cares for her.
