Elisa, I should have taken your review more literally-I just stayed up most of the night reading this straight through. Not the first time we've been on the same page!
I'm finally reading this book. Wish I'd saw your review earlier though. Got sucked in like you but unfortuntely started reading very late at night. Waiting until I have the house to myself to finish now.
So lovely to read a book set in my own city. He really brings it to life, and it made me realise how few books I've read set in Melbourne. My favourite Australian author is from Brisbane so most of the contemporary stuff I read is set there or abroad.
And what a fantastic story it is. It feels so real to me. I'm honestly surprised that this exact scenario hasn't been played out for real.
Pretty sure it hasn't. That'd be a huge deal over here. As far as I'm aware there are no openly gay AFL players. In fact there was an article in the paper this year written by a well known player that urged other players to stay in the closet. He got a heap of flack about it and a bunch of media commentators and football personalities came out against this guy. Vaguely remember discussions at the time about how good it would be if some players did come out.
Could be wrong of course. Will have to look into it.

And Elisa, thank you for enjoying it. I'm so glad that the Aussieness of it didn't seem too bizarre to those living outside our fair continent.
