I thought this book was wonderful. Yes, academic and with its share of statistics, but just fantastically readable and full of fascinating and eye-opening incidents. Like you, I was googling all sorts of names after finishing this. For any writer who's writing historical, either m/f or m/m, this book is invaluable. Thanks for the review, Elisa.

you are right Mara, I think this book is an unvaluable reference source for all authors who want to write historical novels set in that period. The notes and references of the book itself are a treasure.

the essay spend lot of time talking of the middle-lower class gay culture, and most of the people are unknown to the majority of the readers. it's a good essay since proves that the gay culture was always alive, in various form of expression.
