Title: The First Time
Rating: R
A/N: Another short chapter update. It's weird how it seems longer in Word, and then I pop it in here, and it looks so sad and little. Or maybe it's my self-preservation kicking in - short little burts -Bam! and then....ruuuuuun! I mean, for Heaven's sake, I've now got two nuns, possibly armed, running amuck around here. I tell ya, it's quite dangerous writing fics without a certain redhead...But I'm forging ahead! In for a penny....

The first time she thinks there may be more with Marta than simply friendship, she’s rushing to save her brother’s life.
They’ve been having a good time together, she and Marta, hanging out over morning coffee before the day’s briefing, going out with a bunch of the other cops after work. They’ve even gone to see a couple movies. Pepa has found she likes Marta’s company. She’s a good friend, and easy to talk to.
The fact that Marta makes her way past Pepa’s desk far more than a normal day’s activities should allow does not go unnoticed by Pepa, but she does her best not to lead the younger woman on. What she told Don Lorenzo was true, she isn’t ready. Except that she finds herself looking forward to Marta’s visits more and more, and at odd moments she will look up from her desk to try to spot her in the bullpen.
Friends, Pepa tells herself. Just friends.
And it’s what she believes up until the point when she jumps out of the van in front of the monastery, gun already drawn, and starts barking orders to the SWAT team. They listen to her instructions, and then take off.
The last to round the van is Marta, and she comes up to Pepa, concern in her eyes. Without a word, she squeezes Pepa’s arm and nods. She understands that under the bravado, Pepa is terrified. Her brother is in danger, incredible danger, and if something happens to him…She can’t think about it.
She nods back to Marta, and silently thanks her. And for the briefest of seconds, a heat flashes inside her. A strange, yet familiar feeling she can’t quite place.
But she has no time to think about it then, because the rest of the team is running past her and she’s got a job to do and a big brother to protect. She closes her hand firmly around her gun, turns, and runs into the monastery.
