Define for me please... What is the opposite of fear?

 To borrow from the lovely RedMinx.... :-)

Someone said to me this morning, "Fear not..."  and as I think about it, trying to apply this, I wonder how you define the opposite of fear.  Please share...

The first word that came to mind was "understanding" and the second was "courage".

I think courage is the more traditionally accepted opposite. But I believe that most fear is rooted in a lack of understanding, so I'm pretty sure why that jumps to mind.

Courage did come to mind but I wanted something more.. Courage seems to me a response to a situation, but understanding is more enduring. Thank you.
