feeling different

Thank you Leora for referring to this - I can only add what everyone else has said, the writing is wonderful - thoughtful, very specific, can almost feel the atmosphere just through the words, and delightful way with words.
But I want to address that feeling of being an outsider - I also am a second generation and also feel much emotional attachment to my parents' heritage (Hungarian) yet after being raised in America also feel a great identity with being American. But the deepest identity is being Jewish and following Torah - for that nothing can substitute for living in Israel - there you can find others who totally understand that way of life. Not that making aliya will finally fuse all of one's identities - there are still challenges to living here, never quite feeling like an Israeli, but I watch my kids as they easily fit in and am so grateful we live here. Avital's young, I think she would love it here.
