Tutorial #01

Woot! My first tutorial! I was fiddling in Photoshop a while ago and made this icon. I later found I had saved the .psp file, so I've posted it as a tutorial for you all to use.

Learn how to make this:
in Photoshop (should be transferrable)

First of all, I've been reading Laurie R King's novels about Sherlock Holmes and his wife, Mary Russell. Having always pictured Holmes as a bachelor, I was skeptical to say the least when my mother introduced me to the Mary Russell books. However, I am addicted to them now, and couldn't resist to make an icon with my favorite Holmes, Jeremy Brett :)

Anyway...

STEP 1:
Take this picture of "Mary" and this picture of Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes and fiddle until you get this:

STEP 2:
Merge everything so you have a base, then duplicate it. Set this new layer to solf light 100% and desaturate it.

STEP 3:
Take this texture and place it over the image. Set to screen 60%

»

STEP 4:
Create a new layer and flood fill with #07A4D7. Set to soft light 100%.

»

STEP 5:
Take this gradient and set it to lighten 80%.

»

STEP 6:
Take this next gradient and set it to screen 100%.

»

STEP 7:
Take this starfield image. Desaturate it and erase anything covering important stuff (in my case, Holmes' face) and set to screen 100%.

»

STEP 8:
Duplicate the desaturated solf light layer from below and bring it to the top.

STEP 9:
Flood fill a new layer with #EBC99D and set it to multiply 100%.

»

STEP 10:
I wrote the words However Far Away in the font Jane Austen (from the song Lovesong by The Cure that suites them to a t :) and placed it between the gradients.
