I’ve read remarks in several articles that Elijah must have chosen this role to escape typecasting as a hobbit. Such motives may have played a role for him in the Green Street and the Sin City period but I doubt if they are still important. Alexandre Aja has said that Elijah accepted the role because of the POV camera work. That was probably a much stronger motive for Elijah than any "breaking the image". Journalists seem unable to think outside their standard concept of "typecasting" and fail to recognize that a genuine artistic challenge may be much more important for an actor.
