LONG video from Sundance

The embed code doesn't want to work for me here, so I'll just post the link: Emma Roberts and Elijah Wood on Painful Breakups.Horrific editing here (I think the whole video repeats itself twice, plus a jog at the beginning), and dear Lord, this interviewer is THE worst interviewer I think I've ever seen. But there's a ton of Elijah happening here, ( Read more... )

you know, if elijah hadn't been being interviewed, i would have stopped that video before it got going. they couldn't clean it up before posting it? why not have each person with their own microphone instead of passing one around when everyone... including that woman wanted to talk at the same time.

anyway, it's interesting hearing how elijah deals with break-ups. oh, and she can listen to elijah talk all day? i know i could too but i wouldn't keep interrupting him. lol!

HOW is he that nice, all the time?!

it's called professionalism. :)

I know, right? Worst. Editing. EVER. Also worst interviewing. Yuck. But I feel like I can't even quibble, since they're giving me that much Elijah-being-himself goodness all in one go.

See, I think it's even beyond mere professionalism, because it's unfeigned. He's so genuine. It's such a rare and beautiful quality.

Wow, this video reminds me of student videos from my film and video class in high school. Except even most of those are better edited and shot then this. It's an interview, no real need to zoom in and out constantly.

Anyway thanks for the find.

You're right, mumis -- that's part of the dreadful editing. The whole video repeats from the start about halfway through. Apparently no one watched it through before they posted it to the internet! :-p

That interviewer is really unprofessional. Much too selfcentered. "I could listen to your voice all day". Yes, but she's not listening to what he's actually saying at all! Elijah wears his tolerant but slightly ironic smile all through the interview. He's probably thinking "I've met worse interviewers than you are but not many". He makes some interesting remarks about it not being easy to switch from romance to friendship. So true.
Edit: One more thing I just have to ask about. Both women have such thrill voices. I have the same problem with Jenna in Wilfred. As if they are constantly speaking out of their natural range; overexited. Is this culturally determined? Perhaps it seems unnatural to me because my own voice is so much deeper.

Yes, that's exactly how I feel about the interviewer -- lady, nobody watching this video cares anything at all about you. Your job is to ask the question and then shut up and get out of the way while the people we ARE interested in answer.

The voice thing may indeed have some cultural determinant. I think there's a tendency in the U.S. for women to try for a very "perky"-sounding voice, especially if their goal is to engage other people in whatever it is they're doing. "Perky" and "feminine" seem somehow to go together in some people's minds. (As a woman who, like you, has quite an alto voice, this annoys me often.) I didn't particularly notice it with Emma Roberts' voice, but then again, I can't stand her, so her voice is always annoying to me. But I know what you mean about the interviewer's voice -- as if she's had far too much espresso. Maybe Elijah's voice appeals to both of them so much because he's generally a tranquil person, while they both just need to calm down a little bit!

Many thanks for this. At least the interviewer gave a good description of Elijah's voice, "So soothing, you could be a psychologist". But as you and others point out, she just didn't, in fact, listen! Both these women annoyed me so much I wanted to swat them like buzzing flies!!

Thanks so much for this. The editing and the interviewer may be the worst but there's a lot of Elijah so it gets the thumbs up from me ;-)

That was definitely my feeling too! There's even something wonderful, as awful as the interviewer and editing are, about so much unedited Elijah. I saw edited footage from this interviewer on Tumblr this morning, and it was ALL Emma Roberts -- Elijah said about three words and stood there listening politely. And what Emma said had been reframed as "Her role in this movie has even inspired her to create a musical alter ego and possibly record an album," whereas in the unedited footage it's clear that the girl is only responding hypothetically to an idea that came entirely from the interviewer. The unedited video lets us see what Elijah really said, and in what context he said it. :)
