Doesn't washing get rid of the bacteria? I wash all my bag salad type things anyway. I've got reason to believe I'm intolerant to the sulfide washes a lot of companies use to wash and preserve veggies. I don't think anything but water is needed. *shrug*

I don't feel safe saying that washing removes the bacteria. I don't think there's any way to remove it all short of dunking things in bleach.

From Salmonella.org:

What can I do to prevent Salmonella infections?

The best way of avoiding Salmonella infections is make sure that everything is thoroughly cooked.

Other precautions as suggested by the USDA include:

  • Wash Hands and Surfaces Often
  • Wash your hands, cutting boards, dishes etc with hot soapy water before handling food.
  • Separate raw meat, poultry, and seafood from other foods in your refrigerator.
  • Cook to Proper Temperatures
  • Refrigerate Promptly

*nod* I'm aware of all that. I'm pretty sure washing helps even if it won't take care of all of it, it will lower your odds. It's been a long while since I took that food safety course. It was required for my job as a food service worker back in the college days. Scary thought.

I read this half an hour after consuming a salad chock full of fresh, delicious raw spinach.

    You can imagine my joy.
