Loved reading this. I will be celebrating my LJ's 5th BD on Crowleymas. Yay, our journals are off to kindy together! *skips*

On the serious side, you make excellent points, and this wave of censorship makes me sad, too. Once it starts, where does it end? Even if SixApart (or whoever owns & "governs" this now) stops the crap it is doing in its misguided "papa knows best" mentality, it won't stop many of us from self-censoring, which sucks. The snowball is on its way down the mountain, gathering speed & snow & hapless skiers...

Your feelings expressed in this post have a sparkling journalistic quality. I got a lot from your description of the community, then, and now.
Still hangin' in.

Have I told you today what a beautiful writer you are, E? Never heard my own thoughts expressed better except in my own head. I am not leaving. Not just yet. But I am paying attention, and without thoughts and opinions like yours, wouldn't know what to look for/at. Thank you.

It's the difference between what we used to think of as a "coffee shop," a small local eatery where one could get coffee, a pastry, or possibly a slice of pie, (and maybe a light meal,) and sit and talk over the matters of the day with one's neighbors; and the cold corporate sterility of Starbuck's.

Or, more succinctly, it's the difference between operating a site in order to foster community as opposed to operating the site to foster corporate dividends. Different intent, different results, different effects on the users.
