He’d stolen a little corner of the lab for his project. Nothing big because he didn’t want any of the regulars to glare at him too hard, but he wasn’t laying out the materials for creating a bomb in the rec room. He hadn’t exactly kept it a secret that he was planning on making fireworks, but he wasn’t sure whether or not he’d explicitly told ( Read more... )

There were people Tony expected to see in the lab. McGee wasn't one of them. He'd been looking for Abby, but if she wasn't there, he might as well talk to Tim. "McGoofus," he called from across the lab, "Whatcha got there?"

"A bomb." He looked over his shoulder. "And don't worry. It won't go off. Unless someone's stupid enough to light a match near all of this. I'm still in the middle of putting it together."

"A bomb?" Tony stopped halfway across the room, an eyebrow raised in amusement. "Something you're not telling me McGee?"

"Yes. A bomb. And there's a lot I don't tell you, Tony." He blinked a little, but shook his head and went back to his work. "Fireworks, hopefully. For the Fourth of July."

Abby hadn't precisely given Timmy that corner of the lab, since there was no real giving of space, but she knew he was working over there and knew he didn't really want to be disturbed too much. She tried not to, but he'd been working for a few hours now and he needed coffee.

She left the lab and returned a few minutes later, bearing a cup of coffee just the way he liked along with a cup for herself. She plunked the cup down near him but not so near she might accidentally cause a spill of whatever.

"Coffee?"

"Yes, it is," he replied, turning a smile on her. He took the cup and had it halfway to his lips before, "God, I love you," came out. He stopped before the cup reached his mouth, stunned at his own words.

"I didn't mean to say that," he said quickly.

In a rush, he remembered Tony. Oh god.

She hadn't expected that level of gratitude for a cup of coffee, even if it was made exactly the way he liked it, but she wasn't gonna turn it down, even with the literal answer to her query. The part about not meaning to say that, though, that was sort of weird.

"Yeah, everyone does," she chirped, choosing to dismiss the statement as a general coffee-related phenomenon. "It's my charm and caffeine providing."

"And the..." He put his hand over his mouth to muffle the next words. "Never mind."

In a flash of horror he remembered that they'd scheduled today for their date thing. And if he couldn't lie, he wouldn't be able to give her a clever, or not-so-clever, excuse.

"So how are you?" Safe, neutral territory.
