elfbystarlight and I were recently discussing this charming passage from the end of Patrick O'Brian's The Surgeon's Mate. If you haven't read O'Brian's legendary Aubrey-Maturin series, then run along and do so. Here is an example to tempt you, in which Jack Aubrey is visiting HMS Oedipus.

I'm just about to start the series read-through on DW (http://mandc-read.dreamwidth.org/) and this has only served to whet my appetite. :)

Ooh, that looks fabulous! Though you can't call it the Aubreyad, it's doing something evil to Latin (or possibly Greek) and more to the point, it's leaving out Stephen. Annoyingly, I'm completely out of synch with them. I started my reread the other month, I'm getting through the books faster than they are discussing them, and right now I'm on the ninth. Otherwise I would be all over this, I promise you. I'm actually on the audiobooks this time around, the Simon Vance versions, which I can recommend warmly. Have fun!

Yes, even as a newbie I always find it a bit weird that it leaves Stephen out!

I used to be very big on audiobooks back when I was missing a lot of school as a teenager. This might be the series to drag me back to them... I've got two nearby libraries with huge shelves of audiobooks, so you never know what might be in there...
