At the same time, though- would it not cost more to the taxpayers this way? I mean, certainly, if you've got 300 bucks worth of library stuff, but $13.95? I'm pretty sure our library would eventually just let it go...
I'm curious why they didn't just send the police to her house and have her pay a fine, return the book,(maybe more than the library fine but not necessarily $250) and let her off...is there no way that could be done? Did they seriously have to haul her off like that?
I guess I'm looking at it more cost-effectively as well...I see everyone's points though. In conclusion, I doubt she'll ever be returning a book late again :D

Court records show library employees tried repeatedly to contact Koontz by phone and mail. A police officer even visited her home last September.
Word around my library is that she's going around saying she was "discriminated against" because she wasn't a born-and-bred Idependencan (Independencian? Independencee? idk), but that she also had a history of starting drama in town. I do know for a fact that the Iowa City Public Library has had several people arrested for keeping things, because it is legally theft. But it's only been after years and if they owed hundreds of dollars. Our previous fine coordinator was pretty on top of things, but the new one is really non-confrontational, so it doesn't happen so much anymore.
According to deliapants, who works at the Iowa City lib, you probably won't have any problems. Although you won't be able to check things out until you pay them...
