What a shame. I do understand them wanting to make a new version - research shows that a scary number of people aren't interested in watching films older than they are - but why do they have to remake these things so badly?! They screwed up "My Family And Other Animals" recently as well, although that was on the telly rather than the big screen. There's a reason these things are considered classics. They don't need their plots being changed!

The weird thing is, in this age, when we're supposed to be encouraging children to get back outside, surely the original plot is far better than something with added spies? Ah well, maybe next time!

I've been thinking about it a bit more.

They say they are keeping to the spirit of the book, but I think that is one of the things that is gone.

In the books, the children created their adventures out of their imaginations. The parents and other adults became natives, a pike was a shark, lemonade became grog, etc. The beauty of the story is that anyone could go and re-create that adventure themselves.

In the new film that has pretty much been taken away completely because adventure and challenge are constantly thrust upon the children; they don't have to use their imaginations at all and people watching can't go and have the same adventures.
