On one hand, this film has a nice pedigree: Lewis Milestone directs, Howard Hughes produces, and winner of the first (and only) Best Comedy Direction Oscar.
On the other hand, it mostly bored me out of my mind. The action was solid and there were a few site gags that made me chuckle, but this movie hit my "Christ not another action buddy movie" button. The smart guy and the big oaf who don't quite like each other become friends and must work together to achieve two goals (a girl for one, something silly for the other). It's a movie that could translate over time and be remade. It had felt like I had seen it a thousand times before.
And as for that Oscar: it was nominated against Chaplin's The Circus as well as Speedy, which I still haven't seen and both films came out the same year as The General. Was the award rightfully given to the best comedy? I'm thinking no.
In happier news, I saw Sunset Boulevard again today (first time in around three years). One of my favorite.movies.ever. Why don't I own this?
