This movie has been hyped in my general direction for nearly a decade. And after many failed attempts and acts of forgetfulness, I finally got to see it. I watched with the boyfriend, who has the not so great habit of either asking questions and/or snarking throughout any silent we watch. But he was eventually caught up in the movie's momentum and we both were able to enjoy it.
My main thoughts about this movie can be summed up thusly: OMG I LOVED IT FUN FUN FUN FUN. It had a great, building momentum that didn't really let up until the end. The plot is...well...there...but you get caught up in the action and can't wait to see what will happen next. The flights of fancy and special effects were highly commendable and still look good today (or at least it all did on my tv). It's nice to watch a film and be able to ask "how did they do that?" and not have the answer be "with a computer". And words, of course, fail me when trying to describe the unflappable Buster Keaton. I will not deny cringing a little at some of the stunts (ouch!), but his athleticism was amazing. His reactions (or lack thereof), especially at the end, were fun.
So I now have to search other Keaton silents. I just need to break down and sign up for a Netflix account. I have so much I need to see and this really is the easiest path to take.
