Thinky thoughts...

"Just as I need to garden, to dig my hands into soil and draw substance from the earth, I need to read and draw substance from words."  - Karen Smith

So I don't know who the author of the quote is, really.  My first thought was a children's writer, but I don't know for sure.  Amazon doesn't agree with me.

Anyway:  Reading Comprehension in Elementary ( Read more... )

garden, quote, education, reading

It's not your fault LJ is full of fail! ♥

I did! And I didn't summarize very well! Oops.

Well, I guess you'll just figure it out as you go. Each group of students/each class will probably have a different learning style over the years, so you'll end up using all different strategies eventually anyway, I assume.

And I don't think you were as much showing off, as I was jealous :p, so no worries.

I still remember the dragons. And breaking Abby's Slinky and both of our crying about THAT - and Mrs. Dobbs trying to explain to me that it didn't matter because her Mom could afford to buy a new one (in my mind, a Slinky cost $5093850438 dollars.)

Idk, I think as you go along in your teaching days, you'll see strategies in action and they'll make sense. Maybe the book explains ALL of them because they don't want you to limit yourself. Try not to worry about it; it'll become clear once you get to know the students themselves. :) Also, that's what co-op teachers are for - lots and lots of advice!!

Going to look at pictures now.

Allison was a crybaby... about the Important Things in life. (yes, slinkies and dragons count)

True, true. Though there's a rumor that teachers who have had to deal with fresh Swatties before see us coming and say "I can help you with teaching however you like, just don't ask me to tell you how kids learn". Because we nitpick these things a lot.

OH ALSO: "...tried to convince everyone who read his works that putting children in groups where they weren't at the same level wouldn't backfire, but help out those students who were behind, because they could be helped along by the children who were doing well. I remember getting really antsy in middle school lit circles, or reading groups, or what have you, because some people were really slow at reading aloud ( ... )

ZPD is supposed to be in addition to good teaching. Always. But yeah - it can be misused really easily (cough Bisignani cough). So you're supporting whole group instruction, here? Or just heterogeneous groups?

a) yes, but *impatient* b) yes but *impatient*, c) yes, why I never said anything at the time

I always felt ridiculously guilty if I did that, though. Not to say I didn't, but it felt like cheating. And as I was/am a goody-two-shoes... yeah. Not so much of that ( ... )
