I was missing something whilst reading it, but the last line is great! And now I'm wondering if it was intentional that there seemed to be no emotions in the previous parts because in the end it didn't matter at all.

Part of my intention was, yes, to show how growing up seeing this sort of thing probably made Septimus a bit emotionally detatched, or at least uncaring towards his brothers. In the film, even Primus doesn't seem that bothered that Septimus has just killed Tertius, so that just shows how they all see things differently I suppose.
