Five minutes after that first inspection, Wedge was settled comfortably in his new desk, and Vare - or rather, Gara - was staring out the window. The streetlights were still on downtown, and she wondered who had commanded the infiltration of the power utilities. Whoever it was had done a good job - there hadn’t even been a minor blackout.
“I have to say, Diktat Antilles has a nice ring to it,” she said quietly, turning around to face him.
Wedge simply frowned a little. “You know, sometimes I wished we kept the New Republic title. Governor-General doesn’t make me sound like some kind of isolationist tyrant.”
Gara laughed and pushed herself off the window. “Aren’t you?” she said, leaning against his desk. “The last five speeches I’ve heard from you have all denounced the Alliance for various reasons…trade overregulation, free speech infringements, the new campaign to de-arm the populace of Outer Rim worlds…”
Wedge looked up at her and raised an eyebrow. “And that makes me an isolationist tyrant? Goodness me, the requirements sure have changed since I was a boy…” And then he chuckled, a bitter cast to his face.
“Problem?”
“You know, the last time I saw my daughter Syal, she told me that I was just as much an Imperial as Iceheart was. Said that I was betraying everything I fought for.”
Gara just shrugged laconically. “If it makes you feel any better, analysis shows something like seventy percent of the population supports what you’re doing. And you’re a better face for Corellia than that felon Sal-Solo was.” She turned away toward the door and the way out.
“Anybody would be a better face for Corellia than that war criminal. But tell me, Gara - where did you quote that figure from, again?”
