I'm never quite sure if I hit the right tone. Well, and the slang doesn't help either (neither does my slang dictionary, but that is a whole different matter *g*).

Exactely. The problem is - I can sort of hear the melody of his voice, the way he phrases sentences, but I can't hear the words, which, when writing fanfic, are kind of necessary :-P

I think I'm going to rewatch some Life on Mars and concentrate on Gene's dialogue in particular, and read some fic to get the knack of it.
