Everybody's confirming that McCain has picked Alaska governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate. It's a great pick for him for lots of reasons. It's also a potential disaster for fewer reasons

It's a weak choice. Has there ever been a less experienced VP pick? Alaska represents the worst of GOP politics -- corruption, nepotism, and lots and lots of oil money greasing the wheels of politics.
I guess no one else in the GOP wanted to be on a losing ticket.
She was sworn into statewide office for the first time in 2007. Before that, she was appointed to a couple of small-time posts and before that, she was a city councilwoman for some city no one has ever heard of.
She is also a former beauty pageant winner, like Cindy. McCain has a thing for the pretty girls.
It's definitely an interesting dichotomy now. One one side you have the candidate with no practical foreign relations experience coupled with the Veep nominee who is an old hand in politics, and on the other you have the experienced candidate coupled with the relative newb. Also, while it's only been a couple of terms, she's the only one of them with actual executive experience.
My favorite comment I've seen so far was about how McCain would have to be careful in his approach if he tries to criticize Obama for his lack of foreign political experience now, since Palin's experience consists of "basically standing on the shores of Alaska and throwing rocks in a futile attempt to hit the former USSR from there."
