As if I didn't have enough reason to see the upcoming Star Trek movie, they've announced the last major cast member:

Winona Ryder has been cast as Spock's mother!

Yes, I am still in love with Winona Ryder. Shut up. I'm a 36 year old Jewish straight male. Of course I'm in love with her. Did you see Heathers? DUH ( Read more... )

I've already emailed my old boss, who's casting the film, about this very issue. Haven't heard back from her, though. Just goes to show she should have kept a nerd like me on staff...

And I'm using a Star Wars icon because I have no Star Trek icon.

I would think the writers would have specifically mentioned it on the character page (or whatever it's called), where they describe everyone. Or the director would mention something. Or someone had a note for the makeup people about pointy ears and bad eyebrows. This is why theaters have stage managers.

Or it could just be a mistake by the PR people.

And I'm using a Star Blazers icon because I don't have a Star Trek icon. (But will once the press photos of Winona appear!)

I'm actually pretty sure that they wouldn't make a mistake like this, and that the press is the one who is reporting it wrong. After all, Winona does look kinda Vulcanish and it'd be easy for that interpretation to spread. But you're right -- the script would have specified such facts about her character, it would have been researched by the writers and vetted by the producers and director and possibly even the studio. And if they don't have some sort of Trek consultant I'll be shocked. A lot of people would have had to make the same mistake for that to get through.

Did The Darwin Awards with Winona and Ralph Finnes ever come out? They shot part of the movie in the old-timey bowling alley in my hometown and everyone was all excited about it. Also, from the stills I saw, Winona's costumes were fabulous.

Never heard of The Darwin Awards. According to its IMDb page, it was shown at Sundance in January 2006 and went straight to DVD in the States just this past July. I'm surprised it wasn't released with that kind of cast, but some of those reviews are pretty brutal. Must Netflix now
